Ricky
had his first taste of Muay Thai in the winter of 1989. For the next
6 years Ricky fought many times for the European Muay Thai Schools (E.M.T.S.)
at local and national levels and even taking the chance to compete in
Europe on a number of occasions gaining vast experience and a reputation
as a strong and fearless fighter. Although he undoubtedly enjoyed competing
Ricky was as equally committed to achieving his grades and attended
various courses and training sessions held by some of the country’s
top thai boxing diplomats and instructors, Ronnie Green (5 times World
Champion), Master krin, Master Sken and Master Woody to name but a few.
This all changed in the Autumn of 1997 when Ricky, quite by chance, one Saturday afternoon in Manchester bumped into Ronnie Green who with Master A were on their way to a training session at his gym just on the outskirts of Piccadilly. This session proved to be just what Ricky needed, it reignited his passion for the sport instantly and every Saturday afternoon from then on was dedicated to being at that session. Ricky was chosen for the I.A.M.T.F. England team which took part in the European Championships that year in Cyprus. On returning from Cyprus Ricky decided now was the time to fight as a full pro and Master A took total control of his career from that moment on and set about guiding him steadily through the pro ranks. It took a lot of hard work, dedication and determination from Ricky (and a little patience from Master A.) but finally in 2001 he gained a title shot at the W.M.T.O Pro. English Title. After beating a very strong Aaron Holmes to win this title he just got stronger and better forging out an impressive career culminating in winning the W.A.K.O. Pro. British Title in 2002 shortly after opening the Calder Thai Boxing Academy. As an I.T.B.F. qualified Senior Instructor and now retired from competition Ricky is dedicated to his role teaching and coaching the next generation of students. Still working with his mentor and friend Master A, to whom he attributes his own personal success, his knowledge and experience gained from many years involved in the sport make him a formidable exponent in the art of Muay Thai.
